Process of clearing forests. Rates of deforestation are particularly high in the tropics, where the poor quality of the soil has led to the practice of routine clear-cutting to make new soil available for agricultural use. Deforestation can lead to erosion, drought, loss of biodiversity through extinction of plant and animal species, and increased atmospheric carbon dioxide. Many nations have undertaken afforestation or reforestation projects to reverse the effects of deforestation, or to increase available timber.

Since about the mid-1800s the Earth has experienced an unprecedented rate of change of destruction of forests worldwide.[4] Forests in Europe are adversely affected by acid rain and very large areas of Siberia have been harvested since the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the last two decades, Afghanistan has lost over 70% of its forests throughout the country.[5] However it is in the world's great tropical rainforests where the destruction is most pronounced at the current time and where wholesale felling is having an adverse effect on biodiversity and contributing to the ongoing Holocene mass extinction.[6]

About half of the mature tropical forests, between 750 to 800 million hectares of the original 1.5 to 1.6 billion hectares that once covered the planet have been felled.

Much of what remains is in the Amazon basin, where the Amazon Rainforest covered more than 600 million hectares. The forests are being destroyed at an accelerating pace tracking the rapid pace of human population growth. Unless significant measures are taken on a world-wide basis to preserve them, by 2030 there will only be ten percent remaining with another ten percent in a degraded condition. 80 percent will have been lost and with them the irreversible loss of hundreds of thousands of species.

Economics

Historically utilization of forest products, including timber and fuel wood, have played a key role in human societies, comparable to the roles of water and cultivable land. Today, developed countries continue to utilize timber for building houses, and wood pulp for paper. In developing countries almost 3 billion people rely on wood for heating and cooking.[12] The forest products industry is a large part of the economy in both developed and developing countries.

Narrow definition of deforestation is: the removal of forest cover to an extent that allows for alternative land use.

United States

Prior to the arrival of European-Americans about one half of the United States land area was forest, about 4 million square kilometers (1 billion acres) in 1600. For the next 300 years land was cleared, mostly for agriculture at a rate that matched the rate of population growth. For every person added to the population, one to two hectares of land was cultivated.


DIRECTION:

Based on this research, and thinking about what logs and tree stumps could relate to to create a system, I came up with the idea of a system of housing development, rooted in deforestation for the growth. In the system of housing development, there are a lot of tree stumps left behind, as the trees have been cut and sent to log mills, and increasing population growth- more families that need homes, more space needed to build on, and more wood to make the homes with.

sound + motion: tv opener research

• your chosen project and why. how will this project work better in your portfolio than the other option?

I am choosing to do the tv opener because I've never explored that kind of media before. I think it has a lot more potential to be captivating for the audience, and informative for myself, and I've always thought it would be fun to design/plan out a tv show or radio program as a kid. I think the tv opener will work better in my portfolio rather than the data option because I really can't see myself working with and designing just logical data everyday of my life. I am a lot more interested in entertainment design, whether it be for tv, movies, concerts, or fun designs on something random like kitchen appliances... but not organizing data in logical ways. I think I've already explored that aspect to an extent, and I'm ready to move on.

The purpose of television openers, or title sequences are to give a welcoming sense to the show- to really draw the viewer in and tell them about what the show will soon be about. It should be able to encompass the essence of the show, as in, giving necessary background information, establishing context and the tone of the tv program, and making it memorable. Generally when something is made memorable, it somehow interacts with the viewer, drawing some emotional reaction out of them. Creating a narrative scene is a good way to 'embody the soul of the show', to create an emotional appeal, and let the viewer understand what's happening. As far as specifically pertaining to a tv program about fast food, I think it serves a purpose of informing the general public of what a lot of them may eat everyday- the positives and negatives of the menu that these corporations offer.

The context of television openers would be the tv show that had just previously aired, the show that it is opening for, and commercials. It generally appears after the end credits of the previous show, after a slew of ads. Sometimes there is an intro by the broadcast station presenting the tv program, and then the actual tv opener that is part of the show. But really, the actual opener does not require a presenter, it should be doing all the work for the actual show. Outside the television realm, there is also going to be background noise in the home or environment that the home is in, that will be effecting the level of interest with the opener. What else is on the channel? Other programs about food, respectively, since my topic is fast food.

My audience will be those who enjoy food, and those who want to learn more about all the aspects of fast food, positive and negative. I'm thinking that the title of my show is going to be called "Grease Factories" with a sub-head, "The Great Escapes of America", poking fun at the popularity of fast food, and how these companies advertise their product to make it seem almost godly.

sound + motion: non-linear project process

initial sketches of visual directions-  I was playing around with different settings or props that could somehow contain all the work I've done so far in the class. A lot of my ideas were very complex, with advanced flash scripting, etc. that I knew I would never be able to grasp for this project, so I tried changing my direction a little bit, and really thinking about a way that I could clearly present my past work, using flash as the method. I came up with the idea of the ordering screen at a drive thru since it related directly with my fast food theme, and would be a perfect way of presenting different visual elements in a simple, effective way. The intercom system that is seen beside it could also act as the house for all of my sound clips, that could be switched out and experimented with.



I decided to make another white paper scene for the main screen of my interactive flash animation, to keep with the same style I had been working with in previous exercises (drive thru animation).

This project was extremely stressful for me to complete successfully, so although my final is pretty simple basic flash, it took me an incredible amount of time to just comprehend what I was doing. Garrett helped me out so much! One of my main problems was finding a way to keep the enlarging images on top of all the other smaller images on the ordering screen, even if it was on a bottom layer. Garrett showed me how to create a child of each one as it was scaling up, so it would always end up on the top layer, no matter which layer it was on originally.

Man Ray's London Underground poster of 1932 has an ethical appeal, since it employs the london underground symbol in an unexpected surrealist way. Enacting the use of this symbol appeals to its credibility, placing it in high ranks among the planets.

In discussing my posters, the main aspects were about the copy.

We decided that the text "las bases para la prosperidad" disappeared at the bottom where it was originally, although it was nice how the roots 'grew' into the letters. It looked like an after thought, and was awkwardly squeezed into the space. So I moved it up within the trunk of the tree, spread out enough so it wouldn't interfere with the tree. They mentioned that it may not interact as well with it, since it might look like it was just sitting on top of the image, so I allowed for the type to follow the arc of the roots cluster. Other than that, they agreed that the hand-generated aspect was an appropriate language for the mexican american culture, as well as the warm color choices. They enjoyed the metaphor of the tree and oranges representing the family, and it growing prosperous from the vote.

For my tattoo poster, they also were wondering about the word 'empowering' as my copy. They questioned whether it should be present at all, since the image was so strong and empowering on its own. But that was when the arms were reaching up into the sky... now, my poster depicts the arms out in front of the person, looking down on them, which is more subtle. So they said that it would then probably work with the text, to reinforce the meaning. They liked the use of parody, and liked the formal qualities of the poster. They felt a strong connection of the strength in the sleeve tattoo idea, and Vahn mentioned gang members, and their high value of personal tattoos. We decided to lighten up the background a bit from the muddy grey color, to something a little bit brighter.

Overall, the crit went well, just minor tweaks to each poster afterwards. But we did on;y get to myself and Nik, due to time restraints, so we plan on meeting again tomorrow night to give feedback to Angie and Vahn.

sound + motion: final kinetic type animation

I was originally planning to create a vector overlay sequence to add color right on top of the stop-motion. It was supposed to just be transparencies that moved right along with the motion of the photographed napkin pieces, in different colors, but it was sadly a complete failure. I don't really know why I decided to dive into something so crazy and impossible, especially when this is only the second time I've ever used flash!

SO instead, Tyler recommended that I incorporate digital animation in some other way, like separately at the end, in its own scene. I was determined to actually use what flash had to offer, so I tried this route, and I think it's a nice little twist at the end, even though it is struggling to fit in with the original stop-motion.
